SMAARRDEC partnered with CAARRDEC for Halal Goat FIESTA

Halal is a very important Islamic process, as billions of Muslims around the world rely on it for their food and non-food needs. In the Philippines, there are about 10.7M Muslims (10% of the Population), who are morally obliged to partake only of foods permissible under Shari'ah (Islamic Law). For non-Muslims, it is a privilege to partake of products that are safe, wholesome and clean. Because of this, demand for halal-compliant products is continuously rising and is now a fast-expanding business. In the past two years, the DOST-PCAARRD through the Central Luzon Agriculture, Aquatic, Resources Research and Development Consortium (CLAARRDEC) has conducted two Farms and Industry Encounter through the S&T Agenda (FIESTA) on goat. However, this time, the FIESTA is not just simply about goat but it is about "Halal" goat. With the theme "Glocalizing the Halal Goat Industry", the Halal Goat FIESTA is dubbed as a feast with a twist focusing on the strategies and interventions of making halal goat technologies and products available in the local and global market. This first clustered FIESTA on goat is aimed at promoting halal-compliant goat-based technologies. It is a three-day event which is spearheaded by the Cotabato Agriculture, Aquatic, Resources Research and Development Consortium (CAARRDEC) together with the Southern Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic, Resources Research and Development Consortium (SMAARRDEC), Ilocos Agriculture, Aquatic, Resources Research and Development Consortium (ILAARRDEC), Cagayan Valley Agriculture, Aquatic, Resources Research and Development Consortium (CVAARRD) and CLAARRDEC. The Halal Goat FIESTA has four parts: (1) the business forum which covers SFEED Forage-based Pellets (CLAARRDEC), Pelleting Machine and Baler (CLAARRDEC), Artificial Insemination Services (CVAARRD), Halal Processed Chevon (CAARRDEC), and Chevon Dished in Pouch (ILAARRDEC); (2) the technology forum covering the topics on Potentials of Goat Production, Halal Goat as an Enterprise, Halal-compliant Biosecurity and Housing Design, Halal Method of Inducing Heat in Goats, Making AI Work for Halal, SemEx Semen Extender Mixture, Standard Cuts for Chevon, and DOST ONE Lab; (3) Pocket activities such as Palarong Kambing (Goat Jingle Contest, Bleating Contest, Forage Identification, Body Weight, Estimation, and Quiz Bowl) and Cooking Demo with Chef Boy Logro; and (4) educational tour to the different integrated farms in Davao.
