Community based Mangrove Resources Management and Aquasilviculture: A Coastal Conservation and Livelihood Project in Davao del Sur
The project was geared towards community-based mangrove conservation and rehabilitation empowering the organized community as manager and warden of the resources providing them appropriate livelihood through aquasilviculture a proper utilization of the resource ecosystem strengthening and capacitating them by providing appropriate education, proper training and skills a tool in sustainable development.
The research results showed a total of 433 coastal households (261 males & 172 females) who had availed of the benefits from the project. These households were spread to eight municipalities (with 19 barangays and 1 city).
The communities were able to plant 636,000 hills of mangroves covering a total of 212 hectares along the coastal stretch of Davao del Sur. With the total number of hill planted, the community members involved in the project was able to earn a total of P2,226,000.
On the other hand, of the total planted, as of the last monitoring period there was a total of 346,149 fully grown mangroves and with these achievement, the households were able to earn additional income of P865,372.50.
